Executive Director's Report--Open Meeting--NJSBA 2019 Conference

GARDEN STATE COALITION OF SCHOOLS OPEN MEETING: OCTOBER 23, 2019 ATLANTIC CITY CONVENTION CENTER, ROOM 401 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT Welcome to the October open meeting of the Garden State Coalition of Schools! This opening meeting, for members and friends of GSCS, is designed to bring people together. If you know us well, welcome. If you are affiliated with a member district, but don’t have a chance to get to our regular monthly meetings, we are glad to see you. If you are curious about GSCS, please take one of our brochures and my card and get in touch. We welcome new members and we advocate for all! Legislation All members of the New Jersey Assembly are up for re-election on November 5, so the Legislature has been relatively inactive since September. This will change once the election is out of the way and the “lame duck” legislative session, which runs from November until just after the New Year, will be a busy time. Expect some of the “Path to Progress” legislation to move in one or both houses, bringing issues like pension/benefit reform; school district consolidation and special education to the fore. • To see a summary of the “Path to Progress” bills, go to http://pathtoprogressnj.org/legislation/ Other legislation, focusing on issues including mental health (spurred by recent coverage in the Star Ledger and the release of the NJSBA Mental Health Task Force Report), and student nutrition, may also move in the coming weeks. Any action on modifications to S-2 to give measures of relief to some districts that are losing adjustment aid will also likely happen in lame duck. GSCS Fall Activities While legislators have been out campaigning, GSCS has been busy, participating in meetings and conferences on issues including suicide/awareness prevention, community schools, standardized assessments, the Connected Action Roadmap (CAR) professional development model, school funding, social/emotional learning (SEL), early childhood education and HIB. We have also met with legislators and legislative staff, as well as the Governor’s education advisors. GSCS Speaks Out GSCS recently submitted written testimony for the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Public Schools hearing on parental involvement. To read the testimony, go to http://www.gscschools.org/gsc/What%27s%20New/Parental%20Involvement--Joint%20Committee%20on%20Public%20Schools--Ginsburg%20testimony%2010-19.html/_top My New Jersey Spotlight article on the current climate among educators and education groups in New Jersey is available here: https://www.njspotlight.com/2019/09/opinion-we-need-less-rancor-in-new-jerseys-education-debates/ Coming Up • GSCS Thought Leaders Series New This Year! GSCS member district superintendents and BOE members have always been “thought leaders” in their communities and beyond. In that spirit, GSCS will begin a new evening lecture/conversation series in the 2019/2020 school year. The first “Thought Leaders” event will be held Wednesday, November 13 at 7 pm at the Reynolds Middle School, 2145 Yardville-Hamilton Square Road in Hamilton, and will feature Dr. Catherine Steiner-Adair, author of The Big Disconnect: Protecting Childhood and Family Relationships in the Digital Age. The event will be free to GSCS member districts. • November Meeting: Join us for our November regular meeting, one of two evening meetings that we hold each year. This year we will be “on the road” at Metuchen High School on Wednesday, November 20 at 7 pm. The invited guest is Senator Patrick Diegnan, member of the Joint Committee on the Public Schools and the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee. • To see the full 2019-2020 meeting schedule, go to http://www.gscschools.org/gsc/Coming%20Up/GSCS%20Meeting%20Calendar%202019-2020.html/_top And remember to “Like” GSCS on Twitter, where we post a link to our daily news round-up every morning, as well as other noteworthy tweets.
