PUBLIC EDUCATION INSTITUTE                                   August 2007

Dear Friends,

Attached is an invitation to our first meeting of the academic year.  Many organizations are joining us as co-sponsors, including the New Jersey State Bar Foundation and the Institute on Education Law and Policy at the Rutgers-Newark School of Law.  I strongly recommend that you read the attachment as soon as possible and reserve a seat promptly.  For obvious reasons, the program is certain to attract a large audience.

Warmest Regards,   Herb Green

“Join us for a unique program at a distinctive time. New Jersey judges and lawyers overwhelmingly selectedAbbott v. Burke as the most important state court decision of the 20th century. In recent months, Abbott, or at least the way in which it has been implemented, has come under increasingly sharp scrutiny. This fall andwinter, as New Jersey's legislative and executive branches seek to formulate and adopt a new school funding

law, Abbott and its judicial mandates will be at the heart of the debate. You have the special opportunity to listen in on a conversation among five former New Jersey Supreme Court

justices who participated actively in the Abbott decisions over a span of more than 20 years. Former ChiefJustice Deborah Poritz and former Associate Justices James Coleman, Alan Handler, Daniel O'Hern and Gary Stein will share their reflections and views in a panel discussion moderated by Paul Tractenberg, a long-timeRutgers School of Law-Newark professor and the founder of the Education Law Center, which has represented the urban student plaintiffs in Abbott. Questions and comments from the audience will be encouraged.”
