SUBJECT: October Workshops on Transforming High Schools
We are pleased to inform you that the Department of Education will be offering a workshop entitled Redesigning
During the first part of the workshop agenda, we will address the critical need for change in secondary schools and the Essential Elements of New Jersey’s Plan for Transforming Secondary Education in the context of the recommendations made in the NJ STEPS Policy Report (http://www.state.nj.us/education/ser/sc/lowres.pdf) including a review of the proposed graduation requirements. This presentation will be followed by a comment and question period.
Part Two of the workshop agenda features noted educator,
· What do the Essential Elements of transforming
· How can local curriculum better reflect college and workplace expectations?
· How can high school teaching and learning become more relevant to students’ lives and interests in the 21st century?
· How can middle schools and high schools raise intellectual standards without sacrificing personalization?
District teams may register for the three-hour workshop online at: http://education.state.nj.us/events/ where specific information regarding workshop locations and times may also be found. It is recommended that school teams of educators attend the workshop. Teams should consist of a minimum of three staff members that may include superintendents, assistant superintendents for curriculum and instruction, principals, assistant principals, content supervisors, department heads and lead teachers. In recognition of the need to provide a strong foundation in the knowledge and skills required for success in high school and to ensure a smooth transition from middle school to high school grades, middle school educators are also invited to attend.
Note that district teams may choose to attend a morning workshop session from 9‑12 or an afternoon workshop session from 1-4 on:
