Reading Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: New Jersey ranks 4th in the nation for having the largest proportion of public school 4th graders scoring at the highest two levels in reading in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NAR

The proportion of graduating seniors getting high scores on the Verbal SAT has increased by 10% since 2000; the proportion of graduating seniors getting high scores on the Math SAT has increased by 22% since 1994. (A high score is defined as 600 or above). SAT

Students Getting Good Grades: Eighty-seven percent (87%) of New Jersey students taking the SATs have high school grade point averages of "B" or better. SAT

Among Top in Nation in AP Offerings: New Jersey is one of the top 5 states in the nation in the proportion of public high schools offering Advanced Placement (AP) courses through which students can earn college credit. Nearly all (98%) of New Jersey's public high schools offer these courses. AP

AP Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: In New Jersey, 72% of public high school students taking AP exams earn a score high enough to qualify for college credit. New Jersey is one of the top 2 states in the proportion of public high school AP exam takers earning such high scores. AP

More Public Schools Than Private Schools Offer AP: While 98% of New Jersey's public high schools offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses through which high school students can earn college credit, just 62% of New Jersey's private high schools offer these advanced courses. AP

AP Scores Are Among the Nation's Best: New Jersey public school students have the 2nd highest average Advanced Placement (AP) exam scores in the nation. AP

Middle and High School Math Teachers Are the Most Qualified in the Nation: New Jersey is the #1 state in the nation in the proportion of 7th through 12th grade public school math teachers with majors in their field. CCS

Middle and High School Science Teachers Are Among the Most Qualified in the Nation: New Jersey is the #1 state in the nation in proportion of 7th through 12th grade public school science teachers with majors in their field. CCS

Science Teacher Qualification in Middle and High Schools Are on the Rise: The proportion of 7th through 12th grade public school science teachers with majors in their field has increased by 13%, making New Jersey one of the top 8 most improved states in the nation. CCS

Among the Nation's "Smartest States": New Jersey has been named as one of the four "smartest states" in the country based on the quality of its public elementary and secondary schools. ESR

High School Graduation Rate the Best in the Nation: New Jersey ranks at the top of all states in the percent of entering 9th graders who go on to graduate high school. ESR

Among the Best in the Nation in Preparing Students for College: The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education gives New Jersey a grade of "A" for how well its schools prepare students for college. HE

Foreign Language Programs Are Among Nation's Best: New Jersey leads the nation in cutting edge foreign language immersion programs for elementary school students-taking advantage of the natural capacity of young children to learn languages. It is one of the top 2 states in the nation in the percentage of public primary schools offering foreign language immersion programs. ESR

Best State in School Attendance: New Jersey is the #1 state in the country in the percentage of public school 8th graders attending schools without an absenteeism problem. EWQ

High Attendance Rate: On a typical school day, the attendance rate of New Jersey's public school students is about 94%. NJA

Computers Highly Available: There is one computer available for instruction for every 3.7 public school students in New Jersey. MDR

Widespread Internet Access: Almost all of the public schools in New Jersey (98%) have internet access. MDR

Yet Challenges Remain

Teacher Salaries Are Declining: Nationwide in the past 10 years, teacher salaries have increased in constant dollars. However, in New Jersey, teacher salaries have declined by 1%. NEA

High Schools Are Among the Nation's Largest: The average size of a New Jersey high school is 42% higher than the national average. With an average of 1071 students per school, New Jersey is the 6th largest state in the nation in the average size of its high schools. ESR

Public School Spending Has Declined: Public education spending per pupil has declined in New Jersey. Since 2001, per pupil spending in constant dollars has declined by 5%. DEF, NRE and ESR

Schools Need Major Repairs: Fifty-three percent (53%) of New Jersey's schools have at least one inadequate building feature (e.g., roofs, plumbing, electric wiring), and 69% have at least one unsatisfactory environmental condition (e.g., poor air quality, poor heating, too much noise). ASC
