GSCS: Trenton Update - Budget Season at the Statehouse
FYI, The State Legislature is currently focused on holding hearings for individual State Departments re: the Governor's proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2012-2013 (FY '13). The Senate Budget Committee heard the Department of Education on March 29 and the Assembly Budget Committee is scheduled to hear the DOE on April 23. While the legislature holds these hearings, known as the "Budget Break", regular committee hearings and voting sessions are suspended. At this time, the Senate has calendared its return to regular hearings starting on May 14th; the Assembly calendar in regard to regular session and committee meetings has not yet been published.

During the scrutiny of the FY'13 proposed budget, people will be 'talking' about issues in the budget that impact those they represent, pro or con. This is the time that the legislature takes up budget issues and looks to amend or modify positions introduced by the Governor's proposal.

According to a news quote from Senator Paul Sarlo, Senate Budget Committee chair last week, that while saying he believes there are some issues with state aid, significant changes in school funding are not anticipated. It is not uncommon that the Assembly may have a different tact.

By law the legislature must come together and pass an Appropriations Act on FY'13 by June 30.....Stay informed, feedback you thoughts to GSCS, and stay tuned with us...
