Education Week--After That Viral SRO Story, What Districts Should Know About Police Conduct in Schools

National attention is centering on a Florida school resource officer's arrest of two young students, including a 6-year-old girl who reportedly kicked another student while having a temper tantrum. 

The incident occured at a charter school, the Lucious & Emma Nixon Academy. Officer Dennis Turner, who had reportedly has been disciplined for excessive use of force, was fired late Monday after outrage poured in from around the country.

There's just enough of a breeze on a Friday night in mid-September to animate the U.S. and Texas flags standing sentry at Comalander Stadium on the outskirts of San Antonio. The wind carries relief from 95-degree heat, as well as sounds of the marching band warming up on the field, to the hundreds of patrons filing through metal detectors at the stadium's entrance.

Politics K-12 (Education Week)--No Measurable Gap Between Charters, Traditional Public Schools on National Tests

There are "no measurable differences" between the performance of charter schools and traditional public schools on national reading and math assessments from 2017, a finding that persists when parents' educational attainment were factored into the results. 

That's one key takeaway from a report released Wednesday by the National Center for Education Statistics about charters, private schools, and home schooling. "School Choice in the United States: 2019 " also found that Hispanic students constituted a plurality—33 percent—of charter school enrollment in 2016-17, followed by white students at 32 percent and black students at 26 percent.
