Retail pharmacies in some smaller, more affluent communities in New Jersey can be nearly three times more likely to stock life-saving overdose-reversal medicines, compared with drug stores in poorer cities — where residents are at greater risk to die from opioid use.

Education Week--Whites, Blacks Divided on Value of Neighborhood Schools and Diversity, Survey Finds
How important is it that children attend a racially and ethnically mixed school, even if it's not in their local neighborhood?
In a recent national survey by the Pew Research Center, 68 percent of black respondents said that attending a school with a diverse population is important, even if it means that children don't attend school in their local community.
Whites, however, placed a much higher value on neighborhood schools: 62 percent said that children should attend schools close to home, even if that meant that the schools would have a less diverse group of students.

A bill to increase the U.S. Department of Education's budget by more than $4 billion is headed to the floor of the House of Representatives.
On Wednesday the House appropriations committee approved legislation that would provide significant increases for grants aimed at disadvantaged students, after-school programming, and social-emotional learning on Wednesday. It's the first time since 2010 that Democrats have controlled the appropriations process in the chamber, but their bill is very, very far from becoming the law of the land.

So, even though there’s little I’d want to discuss less than guns, I wrapped up my final week of class recently by shifting the conversation once again amid a deadly shooting at a California synagogue and a second shooting at a large university in North Carolina. (Unfortunately, another fatal shooting, in a Colorado school, occurred soon after.)
