South Jersey Times--Time for action on embattled N.J. schools agency | Editorial

Now, an update — and not a particularly encouraging one — about New Jersey’s embattled Schools Development Authority, whose most recent travails include allegations of multiple patronage hiring by its latest executive director.

Another problem, however, is that the SDA is running out of capital to fund construction projects in some of the state’s neediest school districts.

The state’s ruling Democrats are starting to conflate the two issues. Particularly unhelpful were remarks Monday from state Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Gloucester, after he attended with Gov. Phil Murphy a function in Sweeney’s hometown of West Deptford Township.

Chalkbeat--What my students learned — and didn’t learn — from my efforts to teach empathy in language arts class

I began my teaching career as a Peace Corps volunteer in southern Albania more than 20 years ago. Back then, I was petrified that someone was going to detect that I wasn’t a real teacher, so I spent my time learning the English language inside and out. I was convinced I had to be able to answer every grammar question, talk about every novel, and provide the best word choice at a moment’s notice.

Of course, watching my students interact with each other over the next year showed how much help they needed in areas completely unrelated to my curriculum.
