Chalbeat (via Star Ledger)--8,000 students in N.J.’s biggest city already missed at least a week of school

Thousands of Newark students have already missed multiple school days this year, newly released data show, even as the district’s new superintendent makes improving attendance a top priority.

Star Ledger--One N.J. school district is losing kids, the other is gaining them. But they have the same problem.

For as long as many Cranford residents can remember, their children were able to walk to school.

Now a new redistricting proposal could change the current neighborhood school model and introduce big yellow school buses to shuttle some of the approximately 4,000 school children across town. The proposal comes in the wake of the construction of new housing units — and a second plan may introduce full-day kindergarten at several elementary schools.

Associated Press (via Press of Atlantic City)--Most teen drug use is down, but officials fret vaping boom

NEW YORK (AP) — Twice as many high school students used nicotine-tinged electronic cigarettes this year compared with last year, an unprecedented jump in a large annual survey of teen smoking, drinking and drug use.

It was the largest single-year increase in the survey's 44-year history, far surpassing a mid-1970s surge in marijuana smoking.

The findings, released Monday, echo those of a government survey earlier this year. That survey also found a dramatic rise in vaping among children and prompted federal regulators to press for measures that make it harder for kids to get them.
