NJ Spotlight--NJ to Review School Safety as Parents Demand More after Florida Slaughter

Governor announces state and law enforcement will examine whether enough is being done in schools to protect children from possibility of gun violence

In the wake of the mass school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Gov. Phil Murphy along with Attorney General Gurbir Grewal announced they will be reviewing New Jersey’s current school safety directives. Parents, meanwhile, are demanding more action to protect their children.

Speaking at a press event yesterday, Murphy said his administration will be working with law enforcement to “review current protocol and outline additional steps being taken at the state level to augment the vigilance already being practiced by local law enforcement,” but he did not offer many other specifics.

Star Ledger--The top 50 high schools in N.J., according to the state's new ratings

Where can you find New Jersey's top-rated high schools?

It's a question that's never really had an official answer — until now.

For the first time, the state Department of Education has published a rating for each public high school on a scale of 0-100, allowing residents to see exactly how their local school compares to hundreds of other high schools across the state.

A couple of important caveats:

1. The ratings are highly dependent on graduation rate and standardized test scores, which don't always tell the full story of a school's strengths and weaknesses.

2. Some school superintendents have criticized the ratings as oversimplified and misleading.

3. PARCC opt-outs hurt high schools with low test participation rates, because many students who skipped the test were counted as if they had flunked.

You can read more about how the ratings were calculated at the end of this list.

The Record--From the editor: We cannot ignore the anger & fear of our #NeverAgain kids in North Jersey

They should be thinking about the end of classes and choosing a college.

Or focusing on next week’s history quiz.

Sweating over that science project that’s almost due.

Even contemplating what to wear and who to ask to fast-approaching proms.

Instead, they are haunted by another school massacre.

Education Week--'I Worry Every Day': Lockdown Drills Prompt Fear, Self-Reflection After School Shooting

Every few months, the children in Kelly Myers’ preschool class in Roanoke, Va., go to a corner of their classroom and hide.

Myers puts a barricade under the door knob to jam it closed and turns off the lights. Then, the children, who are 2 ½ to 3 ½ years old, sit quietly in the dark until the all-clear. Often, students start to cry.

Lockdown drills such as these are ubiquitous in schools these days, but they take on new significance in the wake of a horrific school shooting such as the one in Parkland, Fla., in which a gunman killed 17 people and wounded 15 others at a high school.
