NJ Spotlight--Bills Aimed at Curbing Sexual Abuse in Schools Progress in State Assembly

 ‘We need to stop these predators,’ says Assemblywoman who has been at forefront of legislative efforts

Measures to prevent sexual assault in schools moved forward in Trenton yesterday when the Assembly Education Committee unanimously passed a package of related bills.

The bills would require training on child abuse and sexual abuse for all teaching certification candidates, require sexual abuse against a child to be reported to law enforcement, establish a task force within the Department of Education on prevention of sexual abuse of children, and require certain training for Department of Education arbitrators.

NY Times--Texas Students Will Now Learn That Slavery Was ‘Central’ to the Civil War

Texas’ educational standards for social studies previously listed three causes of the American Civil War: sectionalism, states’ rights and slavery, in that order. Now they’re being revised.

The Texas State Board of Education has revised its standards for social studies curriculums in public schools to say that the expansion of slavery played “the central role” in causing the American Civil War.
