Dear Senator Turner
This is to request that S-1701 be amended or overturned immediately, before it does any more damage to the quality of New Jersey schools.
The constraints imposed by S-1701 are hurting our schools and undermining the quality of public education in New Jersey.
Programs have been cut
- Red Bank cut its ESL/Kindergarten prep preschool program,
- Freehold cut gifted and talented programs and consolidated art, music and physical education classes,
- Colts Neck reduced Spanish in elementary grades
Teaching staff has been cut all and class sizes have increased
- Colts Neck cut 5.5 teachers
- North Plainfield cut 6 full-time teaching positions
- Hopewell Valley Regional cut 8.4 regular teachers; 3 special education teachers and 6 teacher assistants
- Rumson was denied permission to use surplus funds to open a needed 5th grade section.
Health and safety are being compromised
- Marlboro is turning off it’s heat to save money,
- Bus routes were eliminated in Long Hill Township and Hopewell Valley Regional
Bond ratings have been downgraded in Chatham and Paramus
Red Bank Superintendent quit because of 1701 budget constraints
These problems will only get worse if we don’t change S1701 soon. Our children deserve better.
Please post bills S2329 and S2279 at the December 8th Senate Education Committee hearing to get this process moving in the Senate. We need to fix S1701 now before it does permanent damage to our schools.
Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
