Dear Senator Turner:

We are writing to you today to express our disappointment that S2329 and S2278 were not posted for a vote during your scheduled Senate Education Committee hearing yesterday, Thursday, December 1.

There as been no formal action taken with regard to these pieces of legislation. Specifically, S2329, sponsored by Senator Paul Sarlo, D - Wood-Ridge and Senator Joseph Coniglio, D - Paramus was introduced and referred to your committee on February 7, 2005 with no further action. Likewise, S2278, which has bi-partisan, support was introduced and referred to the Senate Education Committee on

January 31, 2005 with no further action.

In mid-October we presented to you letters from 350 Hopewell Valley residents asking for a change in S1701. We took your suggestion and forwarded these same letters to Senator Wayne Bryant. Again no action.

We need immediate relief. Fuel and energy costs have soared. Courtesy bussing continues to be an issue in our district. Yesterday’s Hopewell Valley News reports of a strong need for an additional school in our district by 2010.

We are respectfully asking you to give us immediate relief by increasing

allowable surplus that would provide budget flexibility when unpredictable costs occur so that programs and class size will not be jeopardized, and a less restrictive ability to transfer from line items or surplus to pay for unanticipated increases in the energy categories, as well as a cap waiver for unpredictable cost drivers, like special education, in the future.
