1 Dear Governor/legislator –

2 Letter to the Editor

I am writing you today as _________________

Dear Editor,

Like many New Jersey residents, I am committed to the fight for a more equitable school funding formula.  However, we will never achieve any positive change if our elected representatives do not commit themselves to a pragmatic and equitable system of education funding and also abandon the punitive tone and focus that have characterized their recent communications and actions toward the public education community.

Lately nearly everyone in Trenton, from legislators to Administration leadership, have sought to portray educators, board members and even the parents and taxpayers who support school budgets as unenlightened, irresponsible spendthrifts who are bent on destroying the state budget with their incessant demands. Few in the Statehouse have the courage to face the hard reality--that education costs have gone up in large part because of cost drivers that schools cannot control but legislators can: the cost of insurance, utilities, special education and litigation.  These costs have soared while aid to schools has declined precipitously.  Flat funding of school formula aid for the past five years has made that decline even more dramatic.  Local taxpayers and school programs take the hit in this environment, while too many elected leaders seem to think they are protected by hiding their ‘heads’ in the sand. Think again.

We expect more than name calling -- from our Commissioner, from our legislators, and our Governor.

We are especially concerned that Special Education students in every district have suffered because of a lack of funding, and we commend Senator Barbara Buono, who has brought this issue to the fore during the FY07 budget discussions.  By following Senator Buono’s lead and finding at least some of the legislatively-promised funds for Extraordinary Aid for Special Education, legislators can demonstrate that they are working to reduce property taxes by addressing a major education cost driver.

We are not afraid of honest, holistic assessment of issues, nor positive recommendations that may move us off status quo. Indeed, we agree such analysis is needed to cut costs and improve effectiveness for the benefit of school and community. Going forward, we need real reform and productive dialog, not self-serving finger pointing.  Parents and educators have ideas to share with you that will save money, improve education for all our children and help insure the state's future by providing the kind of educated work force potential employers are crying for.  We can continue to play the "blame game" and just tinker around the edges, or we can work together for real results that help us all.  We hope that you will choose to work with us to achieve lasting, substantive change
