TRENTON – Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

While state Sen. President Steve Sweeney, (D-3), West Deptford, has preserved his Senate majority, Sweeney has also rocked his own boat by moving state Sen. Loretta Weinberg, (D-37), Teaneck, into the majority leader role. That pushed state Sen. Barbara Buono, (D-18), Metuchen, out of the picture, and consequently off of the Senate Budget Committee.

Weinberg took her seat on the powerful committee, according to a list of assignments released by the Senate Majority Office today. The Republicans have yet to release their assignments to these panels.

Joining Weinberg on the Budget Committee is newly-promoted state Sen. Nellie Pou, (D-35), North Haledon, who replaces state Sen. James Beach, (D-6), Voorhees.

Pou also joins the powerful Judiciary Committee, replacing outgoing state Sen. John Girgenti, (D-35), Hawthorne. State Sen. Nia Gill, (D-34), Montclair, takes over the reins as judiciary vice chair for Girgenti.

State Sen. Joe Vitale, (D-19), Woodbridge, is the new chairman of the Health, Human Services and Senior Citizens Committee, replacing Weinberg. Buono joins the committee with Weinberg gone.

The Economic Growth Committee is contracting by two members, with state Sen. Sandra Cunningham, (D-31), Jersey City, and one of three Republicans bidding adieu.

The Commerce Committee takes on an additional member in this session, with Beach joining Gill, state Sens. Ray Lesniak, (D-20), Elizabeth, and Nicholas Scutari, (D-22), Linden, and two Republican members.

Beach will also be joining the Education Committee, taking the place of state Sen. Jim Whelan, (D-2), Atlantic City, whose vice presidency will be assumed by state Sen. Shirley Turner, (D-15), Lawrenceville.

Whelan takes a seat on the Environment and Energy Committee from state Sen. Robert Gordon, (D-38), Fair Lawn. State Sen. Linda Greenstein is the new vice president of the panel, assuming Gordon’s role.

Greenstein also found promotion as a new member and vice president of the Law and Public Safety Committee, as state Sen. Donald Norcross, (D-5), Camden, assumes the chairmanship vacated by Girgenti.

The Senate now also includes a Higher Education Committee, chaired by Cunningham and including vice chair Pou, state Sen. Paul Sarlo, (D-36), Wood-Ridge, and two Republicans
