Jim  O’Neill OPENING COMMENTS -

            NO ONE IS OPPOSED TO HIGH STANDARDS

EVERYONE SUPPORTS STUDENTS ACQUIRING THE SKILLS NEEDED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE 21st CENTURY –

THE QUESTION IS – DOES THE STATE PLAN AND TIME SCHEDULE ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN

FIRST – I WOULD ARGUE THAT EVEN IN AN AFFLUENT HIGH PERFORMING DISTRICT LIKE MINE THERE ARE STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN ALGEBRA 2 – SOME OF THESE STUDENTS ARE LOW PERFORMING, OTHERS ARE CLASSIFIED

DO WE PLAN TO BEAT KIDS UP IN THE SAME WAY THE FEDERAL GOV’T HAS DECIDED TO DO?

 

THE WORLD IS A DIFFERENT PLACE AND WE NEED TO PROVIDE A PROGRAM THAT WILL PREPARE THEM WITH 21st CENTURY SKILLS

THIS DOES NOT MEAN

·         ALL STUDENTS MUST DEMONSTRATE THE SAME SKILLS AT THE SAME TIME

·         ALL STUDENTS MUST TAKE ALL THE SAME COURSES

·         MAY DO A DISSERVICE TO STUDENTS WITH AN APTITUDE WE HAVE DECIDED NOT TO TEST

THERE IS A DISCONNECT IN THE STATE PLAN ON SEVERAL LEVELS

·         EMPHASIZES INDIVUALIZATION BUT DETERMINES THAT EVERYONE MUST DO THE SAME THING

·         FUTURE HIGHS SCHOOLS SHOULD BE CHARACTERIZED BYT INTERDISCIPLINARY COURSES AND YOUR SUCCESS IN THOSE COURSES COULD BE DEMONSTRATED IN MULTIPLE WAYS

·         CLEARER DEFINITION OF “END OF COURSE” TEST

·         WILL WE GET DIAGNOSTIC FEEDBACK

·         WHY NOT INCREASE BY A PERCENTAGE

·         WHY ALL

·         EXCLUSIONS FOR SOME SPEC. ED KIDS?

·         THEY HAVE IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM

o   HIGH NUMBER OF DROP OUTS

o   SHOULD DO SOMETHING NOW

o    

·         SHOULD HAVE A NATIONAL TEST
