ROBERTS: ASSEMBLY PANELS TO SEEK DETAILS ON HOW

NEW JERSEY WILL HANDLE FEDERAL STIMULUS MONEY

Speaker Announces March 9 and 12 Assembly Committee Hearings on Federal Package

(TRENTON) – Assembly Speaker Joseph J. Roberts Jr. today announced Assembly committeeswill

devote their March 9 and March 12 hearings to ensuring oversight and accountability of the money available

to the state through the recently enacted federal stimulus package and what the initiative ultimately will mean

to New Jersey.

“It’s imperative that New Jersey take advantage of every federal dollar available to it,” said Roberts

(D-Camden). “Our future will be shaped by how effectively we spend this money, and President Obama has

made it clear that he will hold everyone accountable. Ensuring proper oversight and accountability is our role

and we will make sure we do this right.”

While agendas haven’t yet been finalized, Roberts said he expects March 9 hearings to feature

testimony on transparency and oversight measures required by the federal government and federal aid

available to New Jersey for health care, higher education, renewable energy, economic development and

housing and how municipalities can apply for funding.

The March 12 hearings are expected to involve testimony on transportation projects, education,

environmental infrastructure projects, human services and making state buildings more energy efficient.

The Speaker said lawmakers will specifically want to know the deadlines for applying for funding and

which projects are being considered.

“We must move forward with full transparency and accountability to ensure New Jersey takes

advantage of this opportunity to put people back to work and reshape the state for the better for generations

to come,” Roberts said.
