TRENTON, N.J. - Education advocacy groups are among those asking lawmakers to take more time as they considering Gov. Corzine's plan to overhaul the way New Jersey subsidizes local schools.
Corzine unveiled details of his plans on Dec. 12. A copy of the detailed bill became public just last week. And now, lawmakers are planning a hearing on the issue on Thursday. Democrats want to pass the changes into law by Jan. 8.
Funding for all 618 of the state's public school districts is at stake.
The biggest change is that districts would get subsidies for each low-income student. That means some suburbs will get more, while some of the cities that have long gotten the most help could eventually see their help decline.
