The Record - Schools superintendent staying in Ridgewood despite salary cap

Superintendent Daniel Fishbein has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Bergen County Association of School Administrators (BCASA).

Fishbein on Tuesday expressed appreciation for the award. He also announced that he will be staying in the district after his contract expires this summer, despite the much-publicized salary cap that the state put into effect in 2010.

The cap, which has been opposed by the Ridgewood Board of Education, will result in a significant pay cut for Fishbein next year - from more than $220,000 to about $170,000.

The superintendent said he thinks it is unfortunate that superintendents have been singled out by the cap.

"That being said, I have an interest in the issue, so whatever I say will be viewed by some as self-serving," Fishbein said.

"Very few understand the extent of the work that goes into being a superintendent. In Ridgewood it is a 24/7 responsibility in which there is a responsibility for a budget approaching $100 million and over 900 full- and part-time employees," he added.

The superintendent, who this year was also named New Jersey's Northern Regional Superintendent of the Year by the New Jersey Association of School Administrators, is the current president of the BCASA, which each spring gives the award to one of its own.

"It is great to be recognized by your peers. It is important to work within the Bergen County superintendents organization to make sure our new superintendents have a place to go to ask questions and be mentored, to make sure the educational leaders in the biggest county in [New Jersey] have a voice," Fishbein said.

The award recognizes exemplary service in the field of education, as well as to the organization and other professional organizations at the state and national level.

According to Superintendent of Business Angelo DeSimone, Fishbein is a deserving recipient.

"Dr. Fishbein is a leader who is willing to share his expertise," said DeSimone, who has worked with the schools chief for five years.

Fishbein has served on the BCASA Executive Committee, is a founding member of the National Superintendents' Roundtable, and served on the Executive Board of the Garden State Coalition of Schools.

He also is a member of the Executive Board of the Northern New Jersey Superintendents' Study Council.

"I think Dan's commitment to the success of the children that attend the Ridgewood Schools is his main motivation," DeSimone said. "I believe his job is made tougher by the fact that he is a town resident and is so readily accessible. What most people don't realize is how collaborative Dan is.

"Whether he is working with his colleagues from other districts or within this school district," DeSimone continued, "you can always count on Dan having thought 'it' through and delivering a well-considered decision."
