TRENTON - A new poll finds a majority of New Jersey residents disapprove of teacher tenure and want students' state test performances to be a factor in teacher evaluations and pay raises.

But the Rutgers-Eagleton poll released Saturday also found respondents strongly believe that evaluators must consider where teachers work and the students they teach.

Fifty-eight percent of respondents opposed tenure, which teachers get after three years. It prevents them from being fired without just cause.

And while 60 percent support making test performance a factor in evaluations, more than eight in 10 say adjustments must be made for teachers in towns where children struggle and may not perform well.

The telephone poll of 912 New Jersey adults was conducted Feb. 24-26 and has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
