THE Record, 3-31-06 BERGENFIELD -- "The school district has partnered with Dumont and New Milford to open a new program for students with autism this coming fall...Tri-Valley Academy will accommodate the growing number of autistic children in the three boroughs and share staff development and transportation...The classes will be modeled after the Valley Program, a public school program in the Northern Valley for autistic children...The new program is aimed at cutting costs while keeping the level of education high."

4-24-06 Hopewell Valley letter to Senator Shirley Turner
Senator Turner is Hopewell's local representative as well as Chair of theSenate Education Committee. The letter addresses the broken system of school funding and the need for a new funding formula. GSCS called for a new formula in its last 2 testimonies on the State Budget, for Fiscal Year 2006 and Fiscal Year 2007. GSCS has also joined with the education community on this matter and recently the combined efforts of this funding coalition resulted in a school funding formula white paper, see Sidebar on the left - School Funding Facts, etc., to find the paper in its entirety.

GSCS quoted in articles, e.g...."This was [low passage rate of 53.4%] predictable, said Lynne Strickland, executive director of the Garden State Coalition of Schools, which represents hundreds of suburban school districts. Five years of flat state aid is too long, and you can't separate the property tax issue from school funding." With their surpluses now depleted to 2 percent of their operating budgets, and no additional state aid, the only choices for districts were to cut staff and programs, or increase taxes. The pass-fail % of school budget votes from yesterday's 4-18-06 school budget election was the lowest statewide in 12 years...GSCS believes that the convergence of no state formula aid from the state since FY02, while enrollments have grown and cost drivers [such as utilities, health benefits, insurances, etc.] have far outpaced the rate of inflation, combined with legislative negativisim towards schools and no state solution for the property tax burden, has compounded the issues and made these results predictable.
