S1701 Update: Given the extremely tight timelines of the upcoming budget process at the local district level, it is urgent for the legislature to work together to move legislation ahead now that will enable districts to gain a measure of relief for FY05-06 so that quality education will is not placed at risk.

GSCS continues to work hard with its members – parents, board of education members, and administrators – to press for reasonable amendment legislation to S1701. This week 12 GSCS’rs attended the Senate Education Committee hearing that focused solely on education progress in the Abbott districts. GSCS’ purpose in being a presence that day was two fold: one, to hear in person about education and funding in the Abbott districts; and two, members were met and spoke with committee members, including Education Chair Shirley Turner, and Senator Wayne Bryant an Education Committee member as well as Senate Budget Chair. Through our delegation, GSCS demonstrated the ‘void’: that the Senate chose not to post any S1701 amendment legislation at that hearing. It is clear that there is no time to spare in order to amendment legislation to move ahead that could provide relief for schools next year. Many thanks to our grassroots group of parents, board members and superintendents from: Bridgewater-Raritan, Glen Ridge, Haddonfield, Livingston, Moorestown, Northern Valley/Demarest, Princeton, Scotch Plains-Fanwood, Summit and Westfield.

ü Thursday night in Colts Neck parents met with Assembly Bob Morgan [D 12^th district] on S1701; Lynne Strickland gave a power point presentation on the issues from a Trenton perspective; Colts Neck superintendent & business administrator presented on S1701’s local impact on Colts Neck schools & students. Assembly Robert Morgan fielded a heated Q & A from parents.

ü On Friday, GSCS Executive Director met with Senator Bryant’s staff at Senator Bryant's Camden office.

ü GSCS continues to work hard with the education community school funding coalition on S1701. The coalition is meeting today in Trenton to discuss S1701 in depth with Senator Bryant

ü Next week GSCS is meeting with the Governor’s Office on S1701.
