A Message from the GSCS Executive Director
Dear GSCS Members and Friends,

The Garden State Coalition of Schools is excited to be hosting a look at what's happening in NJ education.

Our state's new Commissioner of Education, Bret Schundler has been invited to be our keynote speaker.

We are pleased that so far Summit's legislative district representatives, Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr., Assembly Minority Conference Leader Jon Bramnick, and Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz have confirmed
that they will also be joining us at the meeting.

As you know, there's a lot going on in Trenton that will have a direct effect on your schools, and change is definitely in the air. For up-to-date information, see the GSCS website daily: www.gscschools.org

Don't miss the GSCS Summit and this opportunity to stay ahead of the information curve and to gather valuable insight for your budget decision-making.

Your presence is important. It shows Trenton that you care and you are concerned about quality public education.

This event is open to parents, Board of Education members, school administrators and interested citizens.  To help us provide enough seating, we ask that you please email us to let us know how many will be coming from your district.
gscs2000@gmail.com
Thanks for your cooperation.  We look forward to seeing you all!

Regards,

Lynne Strickland
On Feb. 12 Governor Christie delivered his plans to offset the  current year state budget deficit.....
Citing this year's near $2B state deficit, Governor Christie presented his current year spending plan on Thursday.  Among other items, the remaining 2009-2010 state aid for schools ($475M) is to be withheld from schools and may be replaced by local district surplus funds at local district discretion. . . . Go to GSCS website for up-to-date reports on the Governor's plan.

Education Commissioner Bret Schundler noted that schools will be provided tools to allay loss of state aid and to help offset the effects of the required surplus diversion.

GSCS has been in Trenton daily keeping close to the information being provided on the Governor's action to close the current year state budget deficit, reported to be nearly $2B.  In addition, on February 17 GSCS will be testifying before the Assembly Budget Committee on the plan.

GSCS understands that the fiscal situation in the state has made for some very difficult decisions, and while we believe that it is important to be a part of a solution to help the state move ahead, we also recognize our responsibility to inform Trenton of the impact of the loss of $475M in state school aid. With the information on hand to date, our research indicates that GSCS members will not be receiving nearly $90M in state aid for the remainder of this year.

We ask our leaders in Trenton to let us know as soon as possible what tools will be made available to districts-and when-to help soften impacts related to aid and education program reductions.

There are many details to the plan that require specific clarity, and we will be informing you as they unfold.  We ask GSCS members to let us know what they believe the impact will be on their local district for this year and the next.

FYI, the GSCS website already has a great deal of relevant information on this issue.  Visit it often to keep informed!
