Board Meeting Minutes - January 11, 2006
East Brunswick Board of Education, 4:00 - 5:30PM
1. Treasurer’s Report - Dan Fishbein
The treasurer’s report represented an adjusted fund balance of $71,504.75. Approval of the report was moved by Larry Feinsod and seconded by Mary Sudiak and passed unanimously.
2. President’s Report - Stuart Schnur
* Dr. Schnur advised that group that he will be retiring effective 7/1/06 and leaving the state.
* December 2005 School Funding Symposium review and feedback -
The consensus was that Ken Hall was excellent and helped to focus
those present on the import of the issues at hand. The Rutgers panel
presentation could have been designed more specifically for the audience attending. The feedback session was well attended and a draft summary
was circulated for review. It is Lynne’s intention to prepare an e-mail
packet for attendees including updated equalized tax rate information for 2004 and the feedback summary.
*Dr. Schnur reported to the Board on the work of the School Funding
Coalition and anticipated making a more complete report in February.
3. Executive Director’s Report - Lynne Strickland
*Governor-elect Corzine’s education transition/budget team has requested Input from GSCS
*Legislation review included discussion of S2417 Special Education
Review Commission, School Construction issues, and S1701 grassroots meetings
*Discussion of the status of the Bacon districts and possible state response to their position was presented.
* Lynne presented summaries of various planned lobbying meetings.
4. Conversation with Star Ledger Reporters Dunstan McNichol and John Mooney
The guest reporters were very interested in putting a face on the outcomes of
recent controversial education legislation as well as hearing concrete examples
of the effects of the education funding crisis in New Jersey. They were very well informed and were probing for details from those attending. They offered continued accessibility to GSCS in an effort to better inform their readers and lawmakers.
