Star Ledger--N.J. Senate calls off vote to eliminate religion as reason to skip child vaccines as protestors roar

As hundreds of chanting protestors filled the Statehouse halls and spilled into a courtyard outside, the state Senate abandoned an effort Monday night to pass a controversial bill that would eliminate a law that allowed 14,000 school children in New Jersey to skip their vaccines because of their family’s religious beliefs.

Star Ledger--Bill paving way for bigger school property tax hikes heads to governor

The state Legislature on Monday passed a bill that would allow some school districts in New Jersey to charge higher property taxes than state law allows.

The measure would apply to school districts that have lost aid as the state shakes up its funding formula, allowing these districts to make up their losses by exceeding the 2-percent cap on tax increases.

Do your school staff members have gatherings or activities to help them build relationships with each other?

Is there a process for collaborating with community-based behavioral health providers for students who need support?

Does your district track schools’ use of social-emotional learning, trauma-informed practices or other efforts to support students’ and staff members’ well-being?

Those are among the questions school and district leaders can ask themselves as part of a growing initiative to respond to the adverse childhood experiences — or ACEs — research has shown can impact school performance and long-term health outcomes.
