NJ Spotlight--More Voices Join Call for Statewide Testing of Drinking Water in Schools

Influential school boards association backs two bills introduced in state Senate

A push for statewide testing for lead in school drinking water gained impetus this week. Lawmakers continued to press for it and school representatives said they would support it, too.

A group of water-testing advocates gathered yesterday in Trenton to step up the public campaign for the state to follow through on its mandated lead-prevention measures for homes and public institutions.

Adding urgency were the findings this month of elevated lead levels in at least 30 Newark schools – roughly half the district – and questions about whether lead is a problem in other communities as well.

Star Ledger--The PreACT? Another test coming for high school students

New Jersey students can add another exam to the list of standardized tests they might take in high school.

The ACT on Tuesday announced it will release a new test this fall for 10th graders called the PreACT. The multiple-choice test is aimed at helping students prepare for taking the ACT and predicting how students might fare, according to the non-profit organization that oversees the test.

"PreACT will provide valuable insights on college and career readiness to students, educators and schools while students still have time to make adjustments and improve," said ACT Chief Executive Officer Marten Roorda.

NJ Spotlight--Lawmakers Hear Pleas for More State Funding for Transit, Schools, Cities

Legislators hold final public hearing on budget; work now begin on details of spending plan for FY2017

Residents of New Jersey’s cities need better schools, improved public transportation and more state funding for services like legal aid and lead abatement. In more rural and less affluent South Jersey, there have been calls for more state money for land preservation and affordable housing, while throughout the state residents have been asking for increased aid for K-12 school districts.

Now, it’s up to lawmakers who are in the middle of reviewing the budget Gov. Chris Christie proposed last month for the state’s next fiscal year to balance all of those concerns as they work on drafting a new appropriations bill by a July 1deadline.
