Commission assembled by Senate President proposes aggressive measures to address New Jersey’s fiscal problems. Teachers union responds in the negative, governor noncommital

Cutting public-worker benefits and forcing some smaller school districts to merge with their neighbors are among the recommendations released yesterday by a group of fiscal-policy experts who were asked by New Jersey’s highest-ranking lawmaker to find ways to make government cheaper and more cost-effective.

Star Ledger--Hundreds of N.J. school districts should be eliminated, experts say. Here's the list

A new recommendation to curb rising property taxes and make local government more efficient calls for the elimination of nearly half of the state's nearly 600 school districts.

The proposal, unveiled by state lawmakers Thursday, suggests regionalizing all of the state's elementary and middle school districts into larger K-12 districts. The plan would consolidate a total of 278 school districts serving 303 municipalities, according to an NJ Advance Media analysis.

Education Week--Enrollment Is Down at Teacher Colleges. So They're Trying to Change

Colleges of education are in a Catch-22: They’re needed more than ever to produce well-trained teachers as school districts struggle to fill certain positions. But fewer and fewer people are enrolling in their programs.

That’s one of the findings in a comprehensive report of the state of teacher preparation by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, released today for the organization’s 70th anniversary. The report examines the steps colleges of education have taken to revamp themselves in light of increasing challenges for the teaching profession.
